In his influential 2008 book “The Art of the Turnaround,” arts-management guru Michael M. Kaiser expounded on 10 rules for non-profit arts organizations to thrive in the 21st-century economy.

His recommendations covered practical strategies for management structure, long-term planning and marketing. He also offers some tough love about strategies that don’t work. One crucial rule, he said, was that you can’t cut your way to fiscal health. Arts groups must figure out how to generate more revenue.
