This program enhances the K–12 arts curriculum through quality professional opera experiences. Programming runs Labor Day through Memorial Day.

Opera-in-the-Schools Elementary Schools Programming, 2013–14 Season
Opera-in-the-Schools programming will be presented by Arizona Opera’s five professional Ensemble Teaching Artist Troupe, OperaTunity. This season we will be presenting the lively scenes and arias program entitled, Who Wants to be an Opera Star?  This forty-five minute assembly introducing grades K–6 to the art form of opera presents how singing, rhythm, props, costumes and emotion in music help us to tell stories through music and theater.

Opera-in-the-Schools Secondary Schools Programming (Presentations begin February 3, 2014)Instant Opera, an improv opera experience, will teach students the elements of opera while assisting the performers in creating an opera on the spot. This opera experience for grades 6-12 will focus on the skills necessary to tell a story musically using props, costumes, emotion and most especially the voice.

Community Night at the Opera | The final dress rehearsal for each mainstage opera is designated for student and community non-profit groups to attend. This program is enhanced in the classroom through pre- and post-performance presentations by our Director of Education and Education Staff. Registration is required. Priority is given to Teacher and Student groups. Click here to register.

We are currently sold out for the Community Night performance of La traviata.

Original Opera Projects | Through training with the “Music! Words! Opera!” program, we assist teachers and community group leaders in creating original opera projects. These projects both introduce opera to students and give them ownership of the art form. We provide teachers and student groups with a composer to help organize the musical ideas that accompany their original material. Join us for the our Opera Showcase: Operas for Kids by Kids in the spring.

Opera Clubs | High School Opera Clubs—We offer high school music and theater classes the option of forming an opera club. In addition to fantastic group rates to our Community Night at the Opera, these clubs receive some extra behind-the-scenes perks that might include artist visits and visits with production and creative staff. Youth Opera Clubs are also available when sponsored by a school.

High School Internships | Arizona Opera accepts interns whenever possible to assist young people in making informed decisions about careers in the arts. Interested high school students can choose to intern in production, development, administration, education, and marketing, or they may choose to do a little of everything. Production opportunities are available in the costume shop, wigs and make-up department, props department, technical department, and production administration.  See our website for application information.
