Phase I of New Arizona Opera Center Now Open

Who:  Arizona Opera & cast of Il Trovatore

What: With a fresh stamp on a certificate of occupancy, Arizona Opera opens Phase 1 of its new 28,000 square foot Opera Center today and commences rehearsals of its next production, Il Trovatore, with a cast from around the world. Phase 1 houses an intimate black box performance venue, rehearsal space, and orchestra loft and patron viewing gallery. Phase 2 will feature administrative offices, box office, costume, wig and make-up shops, as well as educational and meeting facilities. Phase 2 is anticipated to be fully completed this spring.

The Opera Center on Central Avenue joins other cultural pillars such as Phoenix Art Museum, the Heard Museum and Phoenix Theatre in the “uptown” arts district, which is easily accessible via METRO Light Rail. The Opera’s $8.5 million capital campaign funds the new Opera Center, which was built in partnership with the City of Phoenix, who provided $3.2 million in city bond funds.
