Cast Brings Fresh Faces to Mozart’s Beloved Madcap Tale of Love

Phoenix, AZ (March 18, 2013) —Arizona Opera wraps up the 2012-2013 Season with The Marriage of Figaro, which is considered to be one of Mozart’s greatest achievements. A dynamic cast of emerging professionals, featuring Daniel Okulitch and Jason Hardy sharing the role of Figaro and Sari Gruber, Joélle Harvey alternating as Susanna share an impressive collection of debuts and accolades spanning the globe. Erin Wall, who sings the role of Countess Almaviva, recently received accolades for her portrayal of Arabella at Santa Fe Opera last summer. Marian Pop is the Count Almaviva whose “lively physicality and broad humor,” have been praised by Opera News. The director is Kelly Robinson, Artistic director of BAMPF in Canada.

Okulitch and Hardy have previously played opposite each other in critically acclaimed productions of Don Giovanni at NYC Opera and in Portland as the Don and his sidekick Leporello, respectively. Robinson brings his production of The Marriage of Figaro to Arizona for the first time.

This sublime opera follows Figaro as he maneuvers his way to the altar to wed his beloved Susanna. The plotting and mayhem of Count Almaviva, who has designs of his own for Susanna, creates some of opera’s most comedic moments.

The play upon which this delirious romp is based rocked Viennese society with its thinly veiled attack against the ruling aristocracy. Yet love triumphs in this work of gorgeous ensembles, effervescent arias and a divine overture. The chorus plays a pretty integral role in this version of Figaro; they move furniture and evoke further humor. Joel Revzen, Arizona Opera’s General and Artistic Director will conduct. Sung in Italian.
