History & Board:

The League of Tucson is Arizona Opera’s original volunteer & support organization. James Sullivan, founder of the Tucson Opera Company, asked six local business women for support of his infant company. In 1973, the Opera Dames were founded and developed into a successful fundraising arm for the opera company. “Mi Casa Es Su Casa”, the beginning of annual Home Tours, “Bella Notte”, beautiful formal affairs, luncheons, teas, and rummage sales – the Dames did whatever was necessary to help support opera in Arizona. In 1978 the opera company expanded into Phoenix and became the Arizona Opera, and in 1988 the “Dames” reinvented themselves as the Arizona Opera League, Tucson.
