Arizona Opera Cast Members & Creatives

Angel Castro

Angel 'Halo' Castro started his career in the arts at a young age in acting and musical theater. It wasn't until his senior year in high school, at the age of 18, when he started dancing. His training started at the South Mountain High School dance magnet. Upon graduating in 2008, he auditioned and was accepted into the ASU School of Dance where he graduated with a BFA in Dance.

Castro has danced professionally with and choreographed for many of Arizona's leading dance companies: Scorpius Dance Theatre, EPIK Dance Company, WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury Hip Hop Squad, and NBA’s Phoenix Suns Solar Squad. His athletic-yet-fluid choreography style has made him one of Arizona's most sought-after choreographers and instructors. His choreography has been performed on many stages including CONDER/dance’s Breaking Ground Festival, ARTELPHX, Phoenix New Times Big Brain Awards, and Phoenix ComicCon, Blktinx Dance Festival, nation-wide on tour with Celebrity Dance Competitions, and on multiple NBA Arena courts. He is currently on faculty with ChoreographyPros Convention, which provides performance-ready routines for professional and collegiate level dance teams nationwide.

Castro's work has been recognized by JAVA Magazine as “At the Forefront of Contemporary Dance in Phoenix," and has received multiple nominations for Phoenix Mayor’s Arts Award. He was also named one of Phoenix’s 100 Creatives of 2015 by Phoenix New Times.

Castro has choreographed 6 original evening length productions with HALO Movement Collective over the span of a decade: Underland: The Last Nightmare, Savage Beauty, CELL, EXILE, Rest in The Mourning, and ERA.

Castro choreographed and directed his first short dance + fashion film Letters to June which premiered in 2021. He is currently in production for his new independent poetry and dance film Son of Venus set to premiere in early 2023.
