Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor Comes to Arizona Opera

Wednesday, September 16, 2015

Book lovers and opera aficionados have the chance to relive Arizona's Wild West with a true Arizona lady, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. O'Connor, and her brother Alan Day will share stories from their lives growing up on the Lazy B, a family ranch that covered 250 square miles of windswept land along the Gila River.

Conversations with Sandra Day O'Connor will be held on Tuesday October 6th at 2 pm at the Arizona Opera Center, 1636 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix.  The discussion will be moderated by General Director Ryan Taylor.

Sandra Day O'Connor's Lazy B: A memoir of Western Life

Lazy B: Growing up on a Cattle Ranch in the American Southwest is O'Connor's memoir of western life in the early 20th century. Here hard working cowboys fought to bring life to the desert, herding cattle, fixing windmills and praying for rain. Where both electricity and plumbing were luxuries, young Sandra and Alan grew up at the Lazy B learning to be self-reliant, and respect both the desolate beauty of ranch life, and its many natural dangers.

O'Connor's time spent on the Lazy B prepared her for many firsts in later life, as she confronted a male-dominated legal profession, raised a family, and ran for elected office. She became the first Republican woman to serve as Arizona's senate majority leader; and after years as both a county and state appeals court judge, she ascended to the United States Supreme Court as its first female justice in 1981.

This engagingly told story of hard work, family devotion and perseverance is the first book reviewed by the Arizona Opera Book Club as members prepare for the U.S. opera company premiere of Arizona Lady, Emmerich Kálmán's comic operetta which opens in Tucson October 10 & 11 in Tucson Music Hall and October 16 - 18 in Symphony Hall.
