The Arizona Opera is opening its 2023/24 Season in Phoenix on Oct. 13 with the world premiere of "Frankenstein."

Stage Director Sarah Ina Meyers sets the mood with shadows and wrinkly shrouded fabric.

"It feels like ancient skin or a death shroud," she said. "It's a boundary you cross between life and death. On one side, we have the living side, and the other side we have the dead. The space is inhabited by shadows of all types."

Shadows are created by lighting and by video installation, she said.

"In more complex scenes, our goal is to see shadows on the stage and you won't necessarily be able to tell if it's sourced by a human being or from some other place, entirely."

The production kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 13 at Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe St., Phoenix. Orchestra seats range between $90 and $120.
