An Opera by Derrick Wang

Scalia/Ginsburg

Scalia/Ginsburg is a witty one-act opera inspired by the remarkable real-life friendship between Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The story begins with Justice Scalia trapped in a purgatory-like courtroom, sentenced for his relentless dissenting opinions. When a mysterious Commentator challenges him to defend his judicial philosophy through a series of trials, Scalia finds himself needing assistance.

Luckily, help arrives in spectacular fashion as Justice Ginsburg breaks into the sealed courtroom to stand beside her friend. Together, they face each trial with sharp intellect, playful banter, and soaring music. Blending humor, legal philosophy, and heartfelt camaraderie, Scalia/Ginsburg celebrates the enduring friendship between two ideological opposites and their shared passion for opera, proving that respect and connection can transcend even the deepest disagreements.
